I wanted to create a strong female image to serve as a symbol of accomplishment. This
award captures that idea and was presented by the city of San Francisco to Oprah Winfrey
to thank her for speaking at the mayor's seminar for women.

Artist’s Notes:
LeMoyne-Owen College contacted us wanting an award sculpture that would represent the
college. I designed a Roman looking structure with pillars and steps and then placed a figure
I had previously designed prominently on the steps. The figure is carrying a torch which
represents truth and knowledge. The figure is leading the way for others to follow, implying
that LeMoyne-Owen College is leading the way for others to follow.

Artist’s Notes:
Oprah Winfry has been an inspiring woman to me. She has an indomitable spirit that says "I
believe I can." I wanted to create a piece that would capture that spirit and honor those who
believe against all odds, and conquer their fears and doubts with triumph. The figure in the
sculpture moves in a circular motion, which speaks to the tireless effort, that succeeding
often requires. The figure also appears open and to succeed one must be open to new ideas
and new ways to reach goals. This piece leans forward as if reaching for the impossible. We
all need to Believe.

This award was commissioned for the LPGA Chrysler Plymouth Tournament of Champions in
Florida. The piece illustrates the grace and power of the golf swing. It also shows the figure
and the swing of the club as one. Anika Sorenstam was the tournament champion. The
piece was shown on TV and used in all the graphics promoting the tournament.

Artist’s Notes:
Two figures intertwine and seem to create a circle. They are joined by their arms, which are
seamlessly attached to one another. In life we are often seamlessly attached as we are in
death. We create bonds between us that are unseen and are often very strong. Without
these bonds I do not believe we would have life.

Artist’s Notes:
Helix is a shape in the form of a spiral coil, either cylindrical or conical, along its
length. The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule in genetic research was found
to be composed of two long strands in the form of a double helix, much like a long
spiral ladder. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Foundation asked
that I create a Double Helix for their donor award program.

This is a larger than life golf swing that says this woman is in the moment, that all she has is packed into this moment and that she is giving her all.

Artist’s Notes:
This award was designed for the Atlanta Para Olympics in 2000. It was used as an award for the film festival that coincided with the Para Olympics. I tried to depict a figure that was rising out of a circular form at the base. The circular form represents a wheel chair. The figure is stretching forward as if crossing an imaginary finish line in a race. Its arms are thrown out to break the line and win the race.

Artist’s Notes:
The simple name attached to this piece was important because I believe that creating wonderful food is its own art! I wanted it to have a certain kind of power, the power of wonder, the power to create, illustrated by the fork embedded in the base. I also wanted elegance. I feel that any event where consideration and thoughtfulness are put into the food presentation and preparation lends a greater elegance to the event or lifts it to a higher level.

Artist’s Notes:
A young woman with the last name of Farr played golf with the best of the champions in the late 90's. Cancer took her life but not the memory of her character, her will to do her best, and her achievements within the game of golf and life. This award is in her memory and has comforted others who face the challenge of loss in their life. It also, serves as a beacon of hope or a piece that emulates dreams. The star represents hopes and dreams that we all reach for in our lives.
